Founded in 1940, McDonald’s is a household name. As the most recognizable restaurant chain in the world, the golden arches proudly serves over 69 million customers daily in over 100 countries, across approximately 36,900 outlets. With a new restaurant opening up every 14.5 hours, McDonald’s is the world’s second-largest private employer, with over 1.5 million employees.

FIRST OFFICIAL WEBSITE
In 2002 DECOSTA was challenged to create an online destination for the iconic Fast Food Company. Prior to this, only a simple landing page existed that redirected visitors to other websites. This type of landing page was used by other countries, including the US. At the time, McDonald’s did not use food imagery on its menu boards, or its marketing.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
Our approach was to go back to the basics and identify the company’s hero. Food.
We then presented creative concepts that placed food as the hero and mimicked the menus inside the restaurant, to bring a familiar experience to the online destination. The result was an overwhelmingly positive response from visitors and set forth all other countries to follow suit, with Australia in 2003 and the US in 2004.

The solution was an intranet called McWeb, that not only addressed the needs of staff but also provided a secure means for franchisees and managers to upload financial data to head office. The intranet reduced paperwork and communications by 65% making the initiative one of the most effective management tools created for the company in over 50 years.
